Best Call of Duty 4 Maps

Call of Duty 4 was the best selling game of 2007, and it's no secret why. The multiplayer online gaming is the best seen yet in video games. The combination of great guns, multiple game formats, and a robust achievement system make every player coming back for more, and trying to reach ever higher levels in the game. Combine all these features with some of the best graphics seen yet on the PS3 and XBox360, and it's obvious why the game was, and is, such a smash success.

A really great online multiplayer game is only as good as the maps it's played on, though, and this is where Call of Duty 4 excels. It contains well planned maps that encourage different strategies and different player classes for each level. There's also secret paths, ladders, and hiding spots on each level that you tend to discover over time, giving you something new to find nearly every time you play it.

There are 16 maps in COD4, and though each of them has positives and negatives, some of them are better than others. Here is your opportunity to rank and discuss each of the COD4 maps, and help us decide once and for all, which Call of Duty 4 map is the best...

16 - Bloc
Bloc

A large map, it centers around two large apartment complexes and a courtyard between the two. The map also contains the imposing ferris wheel, though it's only for decoration, which might have been a mistake to not include in the map. Also included is the swimming pool complex, though I've yet to see any fights actually take place in this building.

Strategic control in this map centers on control over the 2 or 3 access points to the 2nd level of the apartment buildings, and for this reason, especially in Free-For-All, the games tend to grind slowly as wave after wave of attackers center around the same spot. In Team Deathmatch, the games tend to become a sniper-fest, as teams control opposing apartments and fire back and forth at each other.

Showdown

A small map, based around a small courtyard with walkways high and low, as well as stairs and paths into the courtyard at both levels.

Free-For-All matches tend to favor outside fighting, and quick dying, as the size of the fighting areas can't support the number of people who flood the areas. Deathmatch games flood the interior, with vicious fighting and control of the 2nd level from which fire can be directed below.

The map tends to turn into a fragfest in Deathmatch games, as grenades are everywhere (though not random), and positions and strategy not useful.

14 - Wetwork
Wetwork

A medium sized map based on a container ship. The map offers a various array of containers that make the ship traversal very 2 dimensional. It is also the only stage that takes place in the relative dark, making night vision common.

The map also offers two high vantage points at the ends of the maps. These can be extremely effective killing areas in Free-For-All matches, as gunfire can be rained down from above from a tough to breach position.

Deathmatches on this map turn into fragfests quickly, as the two teams meet at the center of the map and mow each other down. This stage is extremely susceptible to random grenades, as it is quite common for players respawning to lob 3 grenades immediately.

The stage is also extremely vulnerable to airstrikes and helicopter attacks, as there is no cover from their attacks.

Ironically, despite the matches turning into fragfests in team matches, it is the easiest to score a perfect score (25 kills, 0 deaths) in Free-For-All format, as a helicopter attack can lead to 10 kills.

Countdown

A small to medium sized map based around a missile silo base. The center of the map is covered with cement blockades, missle silos, and steam, creating a tough to navigate kill zone, as enemies can pop up from any corner.

The map is circled by warehouses which tend to be ideal hiding spots in Free-For-All. Fighting centers around these 4 warehouses, with booby traps and heavily defended positions being common. In Deathmatch formats, the fighting spills out more into the center area, as a good strategic push through the kill-zone can be successful.

The level also offers some great sniper vantage points, as the trucks, missles, and silo covers are climbable for a high point on this otherwise flat level.

This stage is great for some game types, not so great for others. The stage is susceptible to random grenades, and tends to stay on the outside of the stage with the large open kill-zone in the middle underutilized.

Shipment

An extremely small map, it offers a break from the larger maps that employ strategy and a gameplan. Instead this map only offers a fragfest in any format other than 1:1.

The map doesn't offer much as far as positions besides a few shipping containers and hiding spots.

This rarely shows up in rotation in Free-For-All or Deathmatch, though it does in other games. I once saw a Team HQ match in this map, and players were scoring 120 kills in a single game.

11 - Bog
Bog

Based on the outskirts of a town in a swamp covered with destroyed tanks, buses and shipping containers. The swamp is difficult terrain, with many hills and pools of water. Combining this terrain with the dusk setting and color of the mud, and it becomes difficult to cross this part of the map without getting taken out by someone lurking out of view.

Buildings flank the swamp and offer a good place to establish a stronghold, from which to fire into the swamp area. In Free-For-All format, fighting centers around the buildings and especially the narrow hallway of the first building. Many tricks and Claymores can usually be found in the hall. In Team Deathmatch, the fighting moves out into the swamp, allowing more strategy. Especially common in this map is the ability to corner an opposing team into a portion of the map, allowing for massive casualties from an airstrike.

Downpour

A large map, with many buildings, houses, and covered in a gray rain that makes vision slightly difficult. For such a seemingly open map, it is both difficult to see people, and also easy to sneak up on other players. Due to the number of houses and items in the map, there's always a corner that goes unchecked.

The stage offers mounted machine guns at either end of the map, making them strategic positions during Deathmatch. Heavy fire can be rained over the entire map from up high without fear of sneak attack.

For some reason, random grenades are a problem on this level, as fighting is often interrupted by a death from a grenade thrown from half a map away.

District

A large urban map, with a market sitting in the middle. It offers various levels and open areas, as well as a tight street area covered with cars and hiding spots.

The large size and diversity of fighting conditions in this game make it suitable for Free-For-All and Deathmatch setups. Fighting tends to cluster at areas where there's a confluence of routes - on one side of the market, or at the top of steps. Also, because of this tightly packed fighting and frequent deaths, random grenades are a problem, as the fighting areas tend to bottleneck with massive killing sprees.

The large number of cars on the street also offer a unique strategy, as they can be used to increase the damage of grenades, adding a new killing method to this stage.
