Top Sex Symbols of Every Decade
By: uranium235 Created:4-28-2008 List Contest: May

Every decade has that one woman whose sexiness and hotness come to define the decade. We're talking Sex Symbols here. Not only are they symbols to every man aged 13-99, but they are also symbols of the time they lived. Think there's any correlation to Marily Monroe being the biggest sex symbol of her day and Playboy coming out at the same time? Think there's any correlation to Brigitte Bardot becoming famous and having Vaseline invented 6 months later?

We've traced back through history, looking through every Sex Symbol to determine who was the greatest Sex Symbol of each decade, from 1900 to present day.

1910's - Asta Nielsen

In what can only be described as a "bad couple of years for men", Asta Nielsen was the first Sex Symbol of Hollywood, starring in her first silent film "The Abyss" in 1910. Her salary in 1911 was $80,000, which adjusted for inflation, is worth about $312,000,000 today. She was such a famous movie star (and movies were so rare in the world) that she was famous in every country in the world (with electricity).

Though her films were created in Germany and she spoke no English, the "silent" nature of the films allowed her to star anywhere. Unfortunately, when talkies emerged in the late 20's, her career disappeared.

1980's - Madonna

The most successful women artist of all time, Madonna came to define Sex Symbol in the 80's, most notably simulating sex on stage during her performance of Like a Virgin during the MTV Music awards. Here's a big tip - she wasn't a virgin at the time!

Madonna's many accomplishments are far too numerous to include here, so feel free to just gaze upon a few pictures of her instead.

1920's - Clara Bow

Clara was the ideal flapper, with short bobby hair, short skirt, and small breasts, she came to define the 1920's and everything that it represented. Keep in mind that alcohol was banned this decade. No alcohol = men find small breasted women sexy? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Clara made the movie "It", which coined the term "the it girl". Fancy. The reason it was called "It" though is because its original title "SEX" would never have made it through the sensors. Critics of the day said "this movie doesn't have 'it', it has 'those'". 'Those' meaning her breasts for those of you too slow to keep up.

Clara's career wound down quickly with the advent of talkies, as her thick Brooklyn accent put off viewers - she was the Fran Drescher of her day.
1900's - Evelyn Nesbit

Evelyn began her modeling career in 1901 at the age of 16, before those pesky child labor and child endangerment rules became common. She was known for her extremely long and wavy red hair, and her slender yet shapely body.

Modeling in her day consisted of posing for artists for sculptures and paintings, and she was the most successful model in the newly created field of "fashion photography model". She was a Supermodel before they existed...likely the reason she never got into heroin and anorexia.

Evelyn will best be remembered throughout history as the woman behind The Love Triangle of the Century. Seems her 1st husband was just a little on the jealous side, and when he saw the man who deflowered his young wife at the theater, he shot him 3 times in the face at point blank range. He's reported to have exclaimed after his shots "Bitch, that's for messin' my ho" (NOTE - fact check this). Her husband used the first successful temporary insanity plea in history to walk out of prison. Hot chicks can do crazy things to a man!

1930's - Mae West

Now this woman didn't mess around with her role as a Sex Symbol. Her first play she wrote was titled "Sex", and after performing it on Broadway for a few weeks, was shut down for indecency laws. Mae served 10 days in jail, but kept it real by sleeping with the warden in exchange for a silk prison uniform (wool can be chafing during prison sex).

Obviously having learned her lesson, Mae's next play was called "The Drag" and was about homosexuality, also getting banned from Broadway. Her final play was called "The Pleasure Man" and no dice again for Broadway.

Mae packed up and headed to Hollywood, where she became the famous Sex Symbol we all remember her for. Mae is particularly famous for her quotes of "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me", "when I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad, I'm better", and finally "I remember our date and have the splinters to prove it".

1940's - Betty Grable

The most famous pin-up girl in history, Betty Grable's ass was stuck to the side of so many planes, she saw more war action than Eisenhower. She's personally one of the greatest war heroes of WWII. Her legs are described as the greatest legs in history, and they were insured for $2M against any damage.

Grable transformed her success as the top pin-up girl into a sparkling Hollywood career, no doubt helped by the millions of GI's who returned home, without seeing a girl in years, ready to tear little Miss Grable apart. They'd sadly have to settle for her movies.

I would of put Raquel Welch in there during the 60's or 70's, but still nice list. Who were the also ran's for the 80's?

The 3 toughest omissions from this list were, in this order:

1) Jayne Mansfield, who might be the #2 Sex Symbol in the entire century, but just happened to live in the same decade as the #1 Sex Symbol. Very hot woman, and glamorized big breasts.
2) Raquel Welch, who was a tough choice to leave off the 60's and 70's.
3) Cindy Crawford, who crossed the 80's and 90's, and thus didn't have a single strong decade, but was divided across two of them.

What happened to the beauties such as Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Wood. Who would think their grace charm and beauty that did not require a lot of make up would be forgotten.
