Best Air Jordans

The Air Jordan XXIII launched on Sunday during the NBA All-Star game. This latest version of the shoe is made with a focus on the environment - there is a bare minimum amount of industrial glues used, and there is a great effort to use stiches and water based glue throughout the shoe.

Even more importantly, there is a rumor that this is the final Air Jordan shoe to come out. It could be true, given that this is #23 (hint: MJ wore #23 too, for those of you not from Earth). Though the Jumpman brand will live on at Nike, the Air Jordan will never have a new release again.

If this is the final version of the Air Jordan, we can take a look back at all 23 of them and rank them from best Air Jordan, to worst Air Jordan. You may remember many of these from years past, you may even own some of these, but chances are they will all bring back memories of you getting schooled on the courts by someone who was better than you at basketball.

Another version of the shoe that MJ never wore in a game, these were the last of Hatfield's designs (until he came out of retirement himself with the XX's). They were supposed to mimic MJ's wagging tongue, by featuring their own flapping tongue, but it proved to be uncomfortable.

Featuring the return of the longtime designer Tinker Hatfield, these shoes draw inspiration from a motorcycle, and include laser etchings into the shoe for enhanced look.

The first shoe released after MJ's final season with the Washington Wizards, these shoes draw their inspiration from the Black Mamba snake, one of Africa's deadliest. They also feature a PVC-based upper, supposed to increase the fit around the ankle and make the laces unnecessary.

The most expensive Air Jordans ever made, with a list price of $200, that featured not only the shoes, but a carrying case for them, as well as 3 CD's.

Featuring "the wrap" look popular with shoes at the time, these were the first designed by someone other than Hatfield in over 10 years.

This version is the first shoe to allow the wearer to choose the type of air cushion to put into their shoe. It draws its inspiration from sport touring cars, with a lean and mechanical look to it, best personified by the grills on the sides.

Designed with a military flair, the shoe draws inspiration from an F-22 jet, a camouflage pattern, and the sole features stripes like those seen on a general's uniform.

Jordan's least favorite version of the shoe, it was not designed by Tinker Hatfield, and Jordan had minimal influence into its design. He wore these only briefly during his comeback, switching quickly to the Jordan XI's when they were available.

Featuring a sold color design around the entire shoe, these were the final Air Jordans to be worn during a game by MJ, as he wore them during his final season with the Washington Wizards.

This possible final version of the Jordan is unique in that is built with the environment in mind, minimizing industrial glues and setting a trend that Nike as a whole will try to follow. The design on the side of the shoe once again gives it a instantly recognizable look as an Air Jordan.

Basically a rehash of the Jordan VII's with additional features, this shoe was the heaviest Air Jordan ever made, and one of the worst selling.

These shoes were made famous by the Bugs Bunny commercials with MJ, which featured a cartoon version of the shoe on Bugs. This version also incorporated the then-popular Nike Huarache technology, helping to give a snug feel to the shoe. These were the model worn by MJ for the Dream Team during the 1992 Olympics.

These shoes were revolutionary in that they were the first Nike shoe ever to not have the Swoosh on them. These shoes were a giant step in the quality of basketball shoes, as they featured Italian leather, unheard of at the time for an athletic shoe. These were unveiled after MJ's first season completed.

These shoes are remarkable in that he wore them only once - in his final game as a Bull, hitting the winning shot over Bryon Russell against the Jazz. They also feature 7 Jumpman logos on the shoe, the most of any version of Air Jordans.

The first shoes released after MJ's first retirement, this model is forever remembered as the model he wears on his statue in front the United Center in Chicago. It is ironic that he never actually wore these shoes in a game, the first model to have that distinction. There is also a near identical baseball version of the shoe, as MJ was playing with the minor league White Sox at this time.

Drawing inspiration from the Japanese flag, its focus was on performance on the court - light-weight and responsive to quick lateral movements.

This time around, Hatfield drew inspiration for the shoe from a panther, as the nubs on the outside of the shoe represent the paws, and the reflecting piece on the heel the panther's eyes.

These were the final Air Jordans worn by MJ during his Chicago Bulls run.

MJ wore these shoes for the first time on November 17th, 1984 in a game against the 76ers. The NBA, citing its restrictive uniform policy, banned the shoe due to its red and black coloring. MJ was fined $5000 every game that he wore the shoe - Nike couldn't have dreamed of better publicity than that. Due to the high popularity of the shoes, Nike made a version for the public that was released in the Spring of 1985.

By far the most sought after version of the shoe, these were designed by Tinker Hatfield a year before it was finally approved, as he designed them with the hopes that Jordan would someday return to basketball.

Their most unique visual feature is the shiny black patent leather fronts. This look is instantly recognizable as an Air Jordan.

MJ himself has said that his goal was to create a shoe that could be worn "as a formal shoe", which it was by Boyz II Men during a performance at the Grammys that year.

This version of the shoe was the first sold by Nike to a worldwide audience. It was also featured in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing.

This version of the shoe was worn by MJ when he won his first championship with the Bulls in 1991. Its distinctive feature was the two-holed tongue, allowing for an easy way to pull the shoe on.

These versions of the shoe are remarkable in many ways - they are the first to feature the now common visible "air" cushion in the heel of the shoe, the first to feature the now common "Jumpman" logo, and the first to feature Spike Lee as Mars Blackmon in commercials.

These shoes were also the first designed by Tinker Hatfield, the designer for almost all of the remaining Jordan shoes. MJ himself has called these his favorite version of the shoe.

These shoes, released in early 1990, are the best selling Air Jordans of all time. They featured many revolutionary features, including a reflective tongue and the clear sole, which gave a unique look to the shoe. Hatfield got his inspiration for the shoe from looking at WWII Mustang's, with the tiger teeth on the side, which gave the planes an immediately recognizable look.

Is it sad that I think a list on shoes is awesome?

Actually, a huge undertaking trying to rank these shoes...I think you have done an admirably job, and for the most part as a fellow sneakerhead I'd agree with most of your selections. However, you have actually included the Jordan XXIIs twice on your list. The white version you describe as the XXIs, is actually the XXII and you can see traces of the stealth fighter pattern on the rear of the shoe.

Thanks - the XXI has been updated with the correct image.
