NBA's Most Unbreakable Records
By: bluedevil2k Created:2-27-2008 List Contest: Staff not Eligible

Every sport has its records. The NBA is no different. However, some of the records in the NBA are so amazing, so ridiculous, that they will never be broken. The only place most of these records will ever be broken is by some college kid, skipping class, and playing a season on his PS3.

You may notice that the name "Wilt Chamberlain" figures prominently on this list, and with good reason. When compiling the list, Wilt's name popped up approximately 10,000 times. This was likely because I made my list by interviewing 60 year old women. But, it shows the dominance that Wilt had over the game...and the ladies.

Here are the NBA's Most Unbreakable Records.

Most Points in First Half

107 by the Phoenix Suns vs. the Denver Nuggets on November 10, 1990

The good old days of Paul Westhead and Doug Moe produced some of the highest scoring games in NBA history. The Phoenix Suns scored 107 points in the first half of this run-n-gun game back in 1990. Most teams don't score 107 points in the entire season any more. The current iteration of the Suns are known for their running style, but even they only average 109 points per game (before Shaq slowed them to a crawl that is). With the emphasis on scoring and defense (concepts foreign to the Nuggets at the time), this record will likely never be challenged, barring the NBA's adoption of the MTV Rock N Jock 10 point basket.

Most Minutes per Game

48.5 by Wilt Chamberlain, 1961-62

Another Wilt record, but certainly never to be broken, either. Wilt averaged 48.5 minutes per game in the '61-'62 season, thanks to going the full tilt for 79 of the 80 games, and playing in 10 overtime periods. He would play in 3882 of the team's 3890 minutes that season, and likely would have played all of them had he not been ejected with 8 minutes left to play.

Most Points in a Game

100 by Wilt Chamberlain vs. the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962

Once thought to be completely unbreakable, Kobe's 81 point effort 2 years ago has made people go "Hmmm....maybe someone could score 100 points in a game." However, if you take Kobe's game away, and factor in Michael Jordan's retirement for the 3rd time, no one has scored more than 70 in nearly 20 years. This record is probably safe unless there are massive rules changes, or David Stern merges the NBA and the WNBA.

40/40 Games

Wilt Chamberlain once had 78 points and 43 rebounds in a game, he also had a game with 58 points and 42 rebounds.

Although somewhat of an obscure record, this record without a doubt will never be broken by anyone in the NBA. Baseball can have its 40/40 club, but the NBA's is far more elite. Wilt's 2 MONSTER games are absolutely mind-blowing. You'd think with stats like these, no one had touched the ball all evening. Not true - he allowed his white teammates to practice with it during halftime.

Nothing defines "complete and utter domination" in a basketball game quite like these stat lines. They truly explain how dominant a player Wilt was in his day. Wilt will, without a doubt, be the only member of the NBA's 40/40 club.

Most Points Per Game

50.4 by Wilt Chamberlain, 1961-62

2 year ago, Kobe scored over 40 points in a game for 11 straight games, and everyone freaked. If Wilt had done that in his 61-62 season, his points per game average would have fallen. Every game, night in and night out, he went out and averaged 50 points per game. Needless to say, he would have easily been the top fantasy basketball choice of the year in the 61-62 season.

Most Rebounds in a Game

55 by Wilt Chamberlain vs. the Boston Celtics on November 24, 1960

Fans freak out today when Kevin Garnet gets 20 rebounds in an entire game. Wilt had that amount 15 minutes into the game. What makes this even more remarkable a feat is that he wasn't doing this against a bunch of Rec-Spec wearing white guys who were all shorter than 6'6". He was facing off against Bill Russell in this game, the self-proclaimed best rebounder ever. Wilt's stats would say otherwise though. Most teams don't miss 55 shots the entire game, so breaking this record is likely impossible.

Most Points in a Game... Just FYI - David Robinson scored 71 points in 1994.

16 of 30 make playoffs in NBA and NHL...so why the silly crack re Bettman. Hey, there's enough to dislike him for (no meaningful US TV hockey deal, not enough Canadian teams, hockey in silly US south mnarkets) you don't need to make stuff up.

I'd also like to comment on the idiotic NHL reference "One can only assume that Gary Bettman was commissioner at this point in NBA history, and that every team made the playoffs like they do now in hockey". Lets see, 16 of 30 teams make the NHL playoffs, 16 of 30 NBA teams make the playoffs. Quite similar really

Yes, now there are 30 teams in the NHL - back when there were only 24 teams in the NHL, there were still 16 teams in the playoffs.

Yeah - umm, great. Too bad David Robinson scored 71 points in 1994. Nice catch, bros. If David Robinson could score 71 in 1994, he could have surpassed the 100 Wilt scored in 1962. I know that's not the issue here, I'm just sayin'.....one of the top 3-4 centers of all time - watch the old tapes of David, circa 1989-1996, if you don't believe me.

Kobe scored 81 points in a game and Wilt was a 7'2 guy playing with guys an average height of 6'1

what about triple doubles? Wilt has 181 which is not very breakable; the next two are magic with 138 and kidd with 99

what about most minutes in a game? dale ellis played 69 minutes against milwaukee in 1989

The Big O (guest) says:

How could you forget Oscar Robertson's double/double season average. As far as I know nobody else has done this, and the Big O did it twice.

Sartan13 (guest) says:

This is about records Wilt has the most records

Not the Big O (guest) says:

I think you mean triple-double. A lot of people have averaged double-doubles over their entire career.

jw (guest) says:
4-21-2008 8:39 am

yeah, a lot of these records are unbreakable just because the game has slowed down a lot. if you adjust for pace, kobe's 81 points was the more impressive stat. i'd be surprised if the 88 games record wasn't broken - people get traded mid-season all the time. what makes that one unbreakable?

billybig (guest) says:

what about wilts double triple double 22points 25rebounds and 21assists

ian (guest) says:

inc (guest) says:
5-21-2008 12:19 pm

Joe what about Pete Maravich, he scored 68 or something like that against the knicks. Pistol Pete Maravich is white

Nick (guest) says:

Love the white guy points... Would love to see that stat on Sportcenter. Ya know, as great as Wilt was, and as great as Jordan was, just looking at the numbers and remembering watching it on TV, Kobe and LeBron are not as great as ESPN makes them out to be. Sure theyre great ball players, but people keep saying "may be the best of all time" KEEP DREAMING!

what most scored in game 71?? are you fool??? kobe make 81 he isnt the most scored in a game!

I think the site is great, but would change #1 and #2. I only suggest because it is alot harder to be consistent and average 50 ppg in an 82 game season than to have a game and grab 55 boards. I know 55 is an unremarkable number but it is more likely to happen than 50ppg. Not to mention the closest since Wilts 50ppg was MJ with 37.1 back in '87. Plus you know Dwight will break that one ;-) Bill Russell won 11 titles as player. I do not think one player will ever win that many.

theses records could be imposible to beat but for all the laker fans. Sad to say but my team the boston celtics went all the way

Axel (guest) says:

what about most wins in a season by a team? 70? or 72...something like that. that's gonna be a hard one to break...however, i think the lakers might have a chance at it this year.
