Top 10 Best MMA Fighters Ever
By: flancrest1994 Created:7-05-2008 List Contest: July

Mixed Martial Arts has become one of the hottest sports in the world, one that I think should be put into the olympics. The sport never wouldve been lifted if it werent for these fighters. The thing is though... I would NEVER want to fight against one of these guys in my life.

Tito Ortiz

Ortiz debuted at UFC 13 in 1997. He then went on to fight at UFC 18 winning, and UFC 19 also winning by TKO. He became a champion in the light heavyweight division at UFC 25 vs Wanderlei Silva. Tito fought in many big fights and stayed in the top 10 in the world for most of his carreer. He announced his retirement before losing to Lyoto Machida at UFC 84

Urijah Faber

The California Kid has defeated some of the best fighters and stays consistently number 1 in the featherweight division! He recently defeated Jens Pulver in a WEC featherweight title fight.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

Rampage is a great striker and is one of the best fighters in the light heavyweight division. He was a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 7. He fought Forrest Griffin on July 5th and lost by decision after 5 rounds of great fighting.

Chuck Liddell

The Iceman is one of the most intimidating guys to ever step into the cage with, just his face would creep the heck out of me. He might not be the most decorated fighters but he was one of the pioneers of the sport and surely one of the toughest.

BJ Penn

BJ Penn is one of the most versatile fighters ever to fight. He has incredible flexibility and right now I cant choose whether he should be a lightweight or welterweight. He trains harder than any fighter and it all pays off. He beat Joe Stephenson at UFC 80 in Janurary and beat Sean Sherk at UFC 84 also nicknamed ill will for the trash talk prior to the fight.

Matt Hughes

Matt Hughes currently sits number 3 in the world MMA rankings in the welterweight division, but he didnt get there doing nothing. He beat Frank Trigg II at UFC 52 in one of the best fights I've seen. Hughes did however lose to Thiago Alves at UFC 85. He's still one of the best and one of my favorite fighters.

Randy Couture

Randy Couture is one of the veterans of the UFC and one of the most decorated fighters. He's my number 1 fighter to ever enter the cage.

Georges St. Pierre

St. Pierre lost his welterweight title to Matt Serra a while back then soon after he beat Matt Hughes to regain his welterweight title. He beat Matt Serra after his loss and now sits atop the deepest division in the UFC with almost no one tough enough to beat him.

Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva dominates the middleweight division! He had to defend his middleweight title against Rich Franklin and then soon after that in UFC 82 he dominated Dan Henderson!

Fedor Emilianenko

Emilianenko might possibly be the best fighter in the world right now but that doesnt put him on top of my list. He hasnt fought anyone recently but if he did I bet he would pummel them. He should join the UFC and fight Couture... that would be somethin I'd pay extra to watch.

Kimbo is a joke and will be destroyed. List needs some work but not TOO rediculous. Faber hasnt fought any of the Top UFC guys so we'll see about him.

SILVA OVER FEDOR? I DONT THINK SO. FEDOR NEVER LOST(LEGALY), IN ANY ORGANIZATION, HE NEVER DID A MISTAKE IN A FIGHT. SILVA LOST A FEW TIMES IN PRIDE. ESPECIALY THAT FLYING HEEL HOOK FROM ChonanRyo Chonan, OWNED HIM.

whatever (guest) says:

This is b.s...Where is Sakuraba or Royce Gracie. How about Wanderlai Silva? U obviously are an uneducated MMA observer.

The question was who's the best of all time, not who's the best that only Americans know. I have been watching MMA for a while, this is my observation. Greatest MMA fighters in history 1. Kazushi Sakuraba 2. Royce Gracie 3. Fedor Emelianenko 4. Wanderlai Silva 5. Randy Couture 6. Antonio Rogerio Noguiera 7. Matt Hughes 8. Mirko Cro Cop Flipovic 9. Chuck Lidell 10. BJ Penn

I am not a white American so I am not biased. This is the list that most experts have as the greatest fighters in MMA history from Inside MMA, MMA Weekly, and Sherdog. GREATEST FIGHTERS EVER 1. FEDOR EMELIANENKO 2. KAZUSHI SAKURABA 3. RANDY COUTURE 4. ROYCE GRACIE 5. BAS RUTTEN 6. WANDERLAI SILVA 7. ANTONIO RODRIGO NOGUIERA 8. DAN HENDERSON 9. MASAKATSU FUNAKI 10. BJ PENN

Sakuraba is a natural 183 pound middle weight warrior but he has beaten UFC light heavy and heavy weight UFC champions in their primes who weighted between 205 to 240 pounds on fight night, like Ken Shamrock, Vitor Belfort, Kevin Randelman, Royce Gracie, and Quinton Rampage Jackson. And this list have Faber, who fought nobodies in the list. How ignorant is this list. Sakuraba is number 2 behind Fedor all time. Then 3. Bas Rutten, 4. Randy Couture, 5. Dan Henderson, 6. Royce Gracie, 7. Antonio Minotaura Nogueira, 8. Hidehiko Yoshida, 9. Wanderlai Silva, 10. Mauricio Shogun Rua..GSP and Anderson Silva are pound for pound top ten best, but we are talking about the best MMA fighters ever, and they are not in the top 10. They stay in their weight class and dont wanna fight anyone bigger than them.

fag (guest) says:
2-22-2009 11:31 pm

Hey bitches if you havent realized royce gracie fought at a time when no one even knew what mma was. The guys that fight right now are the real best because of how hard the guys they fight train. Back when all this started no one knew what kind of training they had to do, making the guys on this list the best of pretty much all time. And Real MMA Analyst Silva has moved weight classes, so has penn, and couture so get your facts straight

Real MMA Analyst (guest) says:
2-24-2009 2:44 pm

Silva only fought once outside his weight class, when he fought James Irvin, who is a nobody. I never said Couture nor Penn never fought on their weight class. Plus it is false and extremely eurocentric and American based biased to say Royce fought when nobody knew MMA. In Japan, like Pride, it was already popular, it was one of the biggest sports there. Anderson Silva got beaten three times in Pride by 3 unknown Japanese, one of whom, who is Ryo Chonan was 165 pounds, 20 pounds lighter than Silva. Also people dont know that Royce Gracie also fought in Pride but cant win a belt coz he was inferior there, a guy name Sakuraba whooped his ass and also all the Gracies he fought. These guys on the lists are a joke, it seems to say that it only ranks fighters who Americans know and discriminate against foreign athletes who have whooped these guys on the list. The list have some of the best, but Ortiz, Faber, Rampage, St. Pierre, and Anderson Silva are not on the top 10 best. Sakuraba or Bas Rutten can whoop their overrated asses anytime anywhere.

Pride Warrior (guest) says:
2-25-2009 1:23 pm

Why is Sakuraba not known when he beat 4 UFC champions in their primes? Didnt he kicked ROyce Gracie's ass, bitch slap Rampage, Ko'd Ken Shamrock, and crushed Kevin Randelman like a cockroach. He is better than any of these guys in the list except maybe Fedor. This list is a joke. This is all about UFC not MMA. This site is BS.

Arby (guest) says:
2-25-2009 10:23 pm

Actually Kazushi Sakuraba beat 5 UFC champions not 4. He beat Ken Shamrock, former UFC heavyweight champion, Kevin Randelman, former UFC heavyweight champion as well, Quinton Rampage Jackson, former UFC light heavy weight champion, Royce Gracie former UFC champion at any catch weight, and Vitor Belfort, former UFC light heavyweight champion. That is an impressive record, for a guy who was outweight by 40 to 60 pounds by these guys. So I agree with some of the knowledgeable MMA fans here, Sakuraba is definitely the best MMA fighter ever in history just behind Fedor. Only problem here is he is now white, Brazilian, nor an American. he is Japanese, so American fans will continue to discredit his unsurpassed accomplishment as perhaps the great fighter pound for pound ever!

Samurai (guest) says:

This is written by a biased American fan who only watches UFC today. The writer obviously doesnt know anything about the past nor MMA overseas. The MMA world does not revolve around America! It's funny how Faber is on the list and Bas Rutten, Royce Gracie, Wanderlai Silva, and Kazushi Sakuraba are left out. It's a waste of time being in this dumb MMA site.

Is Sakuraba better than all of these fools on the list? Of course he is, except maybe Fedor. But the thing is he is from Japan and is not popular among white Americans so he will always be left out. Faber is not even in the top 50 of all time, but guess what he is white and an American.

fag (guest) says:

Listen fag, your name truly represents your character! This site left out a space for comments meaning it's free will for everyone to say if they agree with the list or not. The author alone ask for entry of comments, some may agree some may not. You cursing at people you dont know just shows how shallow and ignorant you are. I agree with people here stating that these fighters are predominantly Americans. Guys like Rutten, Wanderlai, Royce Gracie, and Sakuraba are legit hall of famers and I'm glad real MMA educated fans were able to point that.

Interesing comments! Flancrest, your honesty is very rare nowadays. This site is awesome. For one person here saying that Dan Henderson, the greates Native American (Indian) fighter in the history of MMA does not belong on the top 10 list is a joke. Henderson has been a UFc champion, two weight division champion in Pride. Only Sakuraba, BJ Penn, and Randy Couture are the only 2 fighters ever in MMA history to win two belts in two different weight divisions. I also agree that Fedor and Sakuraba are definitely the best ever, and of course much respect to Couture,Gracie and Rutten.

Dan Henderson is an underrated fighter. He was close to his 40's when he lost to a much younger Anderson Silva. Dan "The chief" Henderson should have retired 5 years ago. I bet he would beat Anderson Silva on his prime. Anderson Silva can be beaten, for some reason Japanese fighters always kick his ass. They should put Yushin Okami, who is signed with the UFC to fight him, since he was the last man to beat Anderson Silva. Anderson Silva is getting bored in the weak Middle weight division. GSP should fight him or maybe Andersonm Silva having the guts going up to fight Rampage, Machida, Evans, or Griffin.

Sakuraba, pound for pound, may be better than Fedor because Fedor fought guys his size and Sakuraba fought guys 40 plus pounds heavier than him. Saku knocked out Ken Shamrock on his prime, when Ken Shamrock was the UFC champion. Not to mention, he beat Jujiutsu blackbelt Marcus SIlveira who was 80 pounds heavier, and made Rampage and Randelman tap out, and kicked Vitor Belfort's ass while he was laying down, I mean Vitor was a UFC champion as well. Fedor has beaten guys that are his size, like Arlovski, Coleman, and Noguiera. Guys like Tim Sylvia or Hong Man CHoi are overrated and anybody could have kicked their ass.

DPN (guest) says:

For people here, you guys need to take a chill pill. The author already admitted he messed up on the list. Anyways, Mr. Flancrest, I do not think Yoshida, Rua, or Chonan should be in there when you fix this messed up list. I think it should be 1. Fedor 2. Sakuraba 3. Randy Couture 4. Bas Rutten 5. Wanderlai Silva 6. Dan Henderson 7. Royce Gracie 8. Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera 9. Anderson Silva 10. damn its a tough one, its a toss up between Ken Shamrock, BJ Penn, and Matt Hughes..

M&M (guest) says:
3-11-2009 9:45 pm

I know, why is this list still up here. It's really annoying. Faber or Ortiz being there is like ranking George Bush and Calvin Coolidge as oen of the top ten presidents ever. Saku and Bas Rutten, with Royce Grace are like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and John F. Kennedy. Fedor would be Abraham Lincoln.

wtf (guest) says:
3-12-2009 10:27 pm

Alright, this list is dumb but why are people wasting time making comments here when the author obviously will not change it nor the author knows anything about real MMA history. Tito Ortiz and Urijah Faber on the list and not Sakuraba, Rutten, Henderson, or Royce Gracie already tells us that this site is not pure and realistic. There are other mma sites that has more quality, more accuracy, and more balance like Sherdog, MMA Weekly, MMA Junkie, etc.. Don't waste your time here ladies and gentlemen.

3-21-2009 2:30 pm

Yes, this is ridiculous for so many reasons. First, Tito Ortiz hasn't finished anyone besides Ken Shamrock in the last like 5 years, so he shouldn't be on there. Machida SHOULD be on there, as well as a lot of other guys, and BJ Penn absolutely does NOT train harder than everyone AT ALL. And your dumbest statement was that the WW division is the deepest in the UFC!!! Look at LHW! Retarded!

Yeah the lightweight division is pretty load. Welterweight may be the weakest at this point. I don't think Machida should be there, YET. If we talk about best of the ebst today, yes Machida should be there. But as far as ALL TIME GREATEST MMA FIGHTERS EVER, then Machida will not even make the top 20. Guys like Fedor, Rutten, Gracie, Sakuraba, Couture, Anderson Silva,Dan Henderson, Wanderlai Silva, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira are by far the most accomplished and successful MMA fighters of this decade, period!

Penn (guest) says:

Sure Gracie was the best for his time and deserves a spot on the top 10 list without a doubt, but he wouldn't be able to stand up to any of these other guys nor any of the current UFC fighters. On another note, I think Machida will soon become one of the greatest of all time. It won't be too long.

RC (guest) says:
4-16-2009 8:18 am

Gracie didn't really beat anyone. I think he's way overrated. He hasnt beaten anyone except another overrated Dan Severn and fought a draw with Ken Shamrock. Gracie got his ass whooped by Sakuraba who is the same weight as he is and Matt Hughes who is a weight division lighter than him.
