The NBA All-Star game is right around the corner, and with it, the Slam Dunk contest. Some of the most memorable slam dunks in history have taken place in the dunk contest - MJ's rimkisser, Isaiah Rider's East Bay Funk Dunk, and Vinsanity's Reverse Windmill.
With every memorable dunk, there are dozens of others that have been lost in the annals of history...until now. This list presents highlights of all 23 NBA Slam Dunk contests, gives you the winner of each one, and then ranks them all. This is the definitive list of the best Slam Dunk contests in history.
The 2004 winner's name says it all - Fred Jones, in other words, unmemorable. A one-handed alley-oop to yourself? Seen it a dozen times before. The only disappointing thing in this year's contest is that Jason Richardson was trying some crazy and wild stuff, and missed nearly all of them. This left one of the best dunkers on the sidelines in a very unmemorable contest.
Winner: Fred Jones
If you only looked at these dunks by themselves, you might think they were pretty good. However, when you look at his previous dunks, you realize that he did the exact same dunks every single year! Not even any variation at all. Same order of the dunks, same motions on the dunks, the exact same dunks. Minor apparently didn't get the memo about creativity. When fans complain about seeing the same dunks every year, they have a point, but most of the times the dunks "kind of" look the same. Minor wanted to remove any little doubt that may have remained with the fans, and made them 100% duplicates. I guess he figured they won for him once, they would probably win for him again. Of course, the basketball gods would never allow this to go unpunished, and he was out of the league shortly afterwards. (and yes, I'm still a little bitter about this contest in particular)
Winner: Harold Minor
Harold Miner (aka "Baby Jordan", aka "a huge disappointment", aka "he was exciting in college") showed the combination of power and grace not seen since Dominique. His dunks were original but at the same time a throwback to the mid-80's.
Winner: Harold Miner
The first dunk contest that "commercialized" the dunk contest, Dee Brown will be remembered for "pumping it up" with his Reebok pumps before throwing down an arms-over-his-eyes tomahawk jam in the finals. Whether or not he could see is not really the question - did he have a deal with Reebok is the real question.
This contest also saw the debut of probably the greatest dunker to never win the Dunk Contest, Shawn Kemp.
Winner: Dee Brown
This contest should be remembered for its showcase of the "young guns", as Josh Smith and JR Smith (who no one outside of true NBA fans had heard of before), showed off their athleticism and hops by throwing down dunks with featured both, even if they lacked in creativity.
Josh Smith's most memorable dunk is his tribute to 'Nique, wearing the throwback #21 to throw down a huge tomahawk.
Winner: Josh Smith
